Residency Requirements
Union Contract allows employees to reside in Madison, St. Clair, Bond, Clinton, Montgomery, Macoupin, Jersey, St. Louis, and St. Charles Counties. Residency is also permitted within the City of St. Louis.
Age Requirements
New hires must be 21-35 years of age.
Lateral hires may be over the age of 35 with at least one year of full-time law enforcement experience.
A military veteran shall be allowed to exceed age 35 by the number of service years in active military duty, up to 10 years.
Education Requirements
New hire- Must possess an Associates Degree or 64 hours of college credits at an accredited university or college.
Education requirement waived for lateral applicants.
Education requirement waived for new hire applicants with 24 months of honorable active duty in the US Armed Forces or 180 days of honorable active duty in US Armed Forces Combat Duty recognized by the US Department of Defense.

Granite City was founded in 1896 and the creation of the Granite City Police Department began. Henry Fossieck was named the first Chief of Police and William Cool was named as the first Patrolman. Officer Cool received a wage of $50.00 per month. At this time, Granite City had 992 residents.
At the time of the 2020 census, Granite City was reported to have 27,549 residents. The Granite City Police Department currently has 58 sworn police officers, 13 administrative staff members and dispatchers, and approximately 20 Auxiliary Police Officers.
Granite City has had 27 Chiefs throughout its history, to include current Chief Nick Novacich. The longest tenured Chief was Ron Veizer who served from 1967-1985, an incredible 18 years.
There have been three (3) buildings throughout the years that have housed the Police Department, with the current Police Department located at 2330 Madison Avenue. This building was constructed in 1978 and had a huge renovation and a large addition to the building in 2009.
The Granite City Police Department has had several United States Presidents visit the city, including the most recent visit by former President Donald Trump in 2018. There are many notable people that hail from Granite City including professional sports figures, politicians, actors, and award winning writers.
